FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
update
Maple Avenue RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT

This is an update on the Maple Avenue reconstruction project for the week of
August 22nd, 2009.

Beginning Saturday August 22nd, milling of the Maple Avenue road surface
will begin in preparation for paving of the roadway.

Paving is expected to commence beginning Monday August 24th. The new roadway
will be paved along Maple Avenue from Acer Court to Saddle River Road.

³I am delighted to have been able to bring this project to completion before
the new school year begins, as I had promised², stated Supervisor
Christopher St. Lawrence. He continued, ³Students, pedestrians and motorists
will enjoy a safer, upgraded and attractive new roadway.²

By the time paving is completed, almost all of the new curbs will have been
installed. The small portion of roadway across Route 306, which is part of
the New York State right-of-way, will be paved after the new light control
devices are installed.

The Maple Avenue re-construction project covers the location of Maple Avenue
between Acer Court and Saddle River Road. When completed, residents will
enjoy a new and wider roadway, new sidewalks, new curbs, bus turning lanes,
improved street lighting, new traffic lights, improved light control devices
and improved drainage.

News Article from the NY Times:

5 From a Brooklyn Family Die in a Helicopter Crash
By ROBERT D. McFADDEN
Published: Sunday, August 12, 2001

Federal investigators examined the wreckage of a sightseeing helicopter on a red-rock escarpment near the Grand Canyon yesterday for clues to the cause of a crash that killed the pilot and five members of a Brooklyn family and left a sixth clinging to life with extensive burns.

The sole survivor, Shawna Daskal, 23, suffered third-degree burns over 80 percent of her body when the helicopter went down and burst into flames on Friday afternoon near the canyon's western edge. She remained in critical condition yesterday in a trauma center at University Medical Center in Las Vegas

The pilot was identified last night as Kevin Innocenti, 27, an experienced flyer who had worked for about a year with the tour operator, Papillon Grand Canyon Helicopters. The names of the five tourists killed in the accident were not immediately released, but the police described them, and the survivor, as members of an Orthodox Jewish family from Brooklyn. Since the crash occurred just before the start of the Sabbath, a rabbi was being consulted on the proper handling of the family's bodies, which had not been removed by late yesterday.

Steve Johnson, a spokesman for the Mohave County, Ariz., sheriff's office, said that investigators and rescue teams were on the remote desert site -- between Grand Canyon National Park and Lake Mead National Recreation Area, about 70 miles east of Las Vegas -- and that the bodies of the family members would be removed one or two at a time by helicopter to Kingman, the county seat, before being flown on to New York.

The cause of the crash -- the worst canyon tour accident since a plane went down and killed 8 of 10 occupants on Feb. 13, 1995 -- was not immediately determined by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board, said Lauren Peduzzi, a safety board spokeswoman.

The investigators found only a blue tail assembly and twisted rotor blades in the helicopter's charred debris.

''It was demolished,'' Mr. Johnson said of the helicopter. ''The only things recognizable were the tail and rotor blades.''

The chopper, an American Eurocopter AS350 operated by Papillon out of McCarren International Airport at Las Vegas, was apparently returning to its base after a canyon tour when it went down at 2:35 p.m., four miles east of Meadview, Ariz., a hamlet that overlooks Lake Mead's south shore.

The scene is a roadless, desolate slope, 3,700 feet up the 5,600-foot Grand Wash Cliffs, whose striking red rocks make it a popular flyover for many of the 90,000 aerial tours that ferry 800,000 tourists a year over the canyon.

Mr. Johnson said that all six passengers were apparently hurled from the helicopter by the crash impact. ''The only one who was not thrown clear was the pilot,'' he said.

Another Papillon sightseeing helicopter was flying in the area. Its pilot and passengers did not witness the crash, but spotted smoke rising from Grand Wash Cliffs. The second helicopter ''flew over the area and recognized it as being one of their helicopters and called it in,'' Mr. Johnson said.

Rescue helicopters from Papillon, the Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Grand Canyon National Park responded. One landed and Ms. Daskal was found alive amid the bodies, the scrub brush and burning wreckage. She was flown to Las Vegas by medical helicopter, whose paramedics reported that she was conscious but had suffered extensive burns. A trauma team of 15 specialists was mobilized at the University Medical Center, said a spokesman, Rick Plummer.

Robert Graff, vice president of marketing for Papillon, said the company had canceled its schedule of tourist flights yesterday out of respect for the dead, and the company issued a statement of sympathy for the families of the passengers and pilot.

Relatives of the dead gathered at the company's airport offices on Friday and were being assisted by a Las Vegas rabbi and other counselors, officials said.
