DAILY DOSE:
Tolerance
By Tzvi Freeman
As the world came into being, so did tolerance. It may be the most amazing thing
about our world--that it can carry on ever so loosely tied, enduring so perfectly in its imperfection.
Without tolerance, the sages say, our world could not stand. A world of perfection--
a world that follows precisely every dictate from Above--is not a world. It is a fetus that has never
left its womb, for it presents nothing of its own. A real world is one whose creatures can pass or fail,
can blunder about until they eventually beat their path to the truth.
Only a world that is allowed to stumble can learn to stand on its own feet.
"And such a world," G–d said, "is worth My tolerance."

1.Purims of Tripoli
The Jews of Tripoli celebrated two other Purims:
The Purim of Shariff also known as 'the false Purim', which falls on the 24th of Tebet. That is in commemoration of the miracle of 1745. When the rulers of Tunis besieged Tripoli, an epidemic spread among the soldiers and the city was saved and the Jews with it. For that, the Jews of Tripoli undertook to celebrate the day with praise and thanksgiving to Hashem who had redeemed them from disaster.
· The Purim of Burgel falls on the eve of the New Moon of Shbat. The Tripolitan old Pasha Ali Karamenli who ruled under the dispensation of the Turkish Sultan oppressed the inhabitants of Tripoli, the Jews in particular. The Jews were saved by the 'Queen Esther' of that time, a wise, energetic and wealthy woman (the wife of the head of the Jewish Community) who succeeded in awakening the Pasha's compassion and winning favour in the eyes of the ruler. Quarrels broke up among the Pasha's sons who fought among themselves and against their father. The civil war lasted a few years. When one of the Pasha's sons Ali Burgel seized the reins, he oppressed the Jews and threatened to kill them if they would not give him 240,000 francs. He locked the leaders of the Jewish community and 'Queen Esther'. While the Jews were suffering, a miracle occurred. Burgel Pasha went to war against the ruler of Tunis and suffered a severe defeat. He was removed and Ali Pasha was returned to his office. The downfall of Burgel took place on the 29th of Tebet 1793. 'Queen Esther' resumed her former glory and greatness. She lived 7 years more and died in 1800. The Jews of Tripoli and Bengazi celebrated the holiday as if it were Purim eg. fasting on the eve, read a special Megillah which was written by Rabbi Abraham Kalfone at the time of the event, sending one another gifts, preparing feasts, etc…
2. Purims of Tiberiah (Elul 7, Kislev 4)
Tiberia had been re-established by Sheikh Deir El-Aammar who invited Isaac Abulafia to bring his family and Jewish friends to settle there. In 1743, Suleiman Pasha, governor of Damascus laid siege on Tiberia for 83 days. At last the Pasha was forced to raise the siege (August 27);a short time afterwards, while he was preparing his second attack, Suleiman Pasha died suddenly. The Jews of Tiberia instituted Elul 7 and Kislev 4 as local Purims.
3. Purim Taka /Window Purim (14 Tevet)
it is celebrated on the 14th of Tevet by the Sephardic Jews of Hebron as result of their deliverance from an intolerable tax. It appears that a greedy pasha determined to get money out of the Jews of Hebron. He demanded 50,000 piastres under threat of killing the Jewish leaders of the community and selling the rest into slavery. As the money could not be raised, the rabbis wrote to the Patriarchs about their trouble. They bribed the watchman of Me'aarat Hammachpela to lower a petition by a string. That night, the Pasha woke up and saw three venerable looking sages who demanded 50,000 piastres of him and threatened to kill him if he refused. The Pasha went to his money bag and paid the full amount. Next morning, while the Jews were praying in the Synagogue, for they knew that their time had come, the pasha's soldiers came to collect the money and found at the door of the Synagogue the full amount in a bag. They brought it to the Pasha who recognized the bag. The Pasha accepted that the Jews are loved by Allah and gave the money as a gift to the Jews. However, he asked them to pray for him.
4. Purim of Shiraz (2 Mar'Heshvan)
In 1400, a Jew named Abu Al-Hassan who was both Sho'het and butcher was accused of selling Taref (not Kosher meat) on the eve of Rosh Hashannah/the Jewish New Year. When the anger of the Jews was aroused against him, Abu Al-Hassan embraced immediately Islam. He then accused the Jews of many crimes. The Muslims gave the Jews the choice between death or conversion to Islam; and all chose the latter alternative. One month later, on the 2nd day of Mar'Heshvan, Abu Al-Hassan died mysteriously. A statement was found in his pocket declaring that the Jews were innocent. In memory of this event, the Jews of Shiraz celebrated a new Purim which they called 'Mo'eed katan/little feast'. On that day, they don't work, they exchange visits and salute each other with the words 'Mo'eed katan' and 'Abu Al-Hassan'.
5. Purim of Ibrahim Pasha ( 1 Ab )
When Ibrahim Pasha made war on Palestine in 1832, he decided to attack Hebron. On the road, seeing that his men were very tired, he resolved to halt them at Mount Itan near Salomon's Pools. The inhabitants of Hebron gathered a large army and killed 3000 soldiers of Ibrahim Pasha's army. So, the Pasha vowed to attack Hebron and wipe all its inhabitants. So, the Jews of Hebron prayed unto Hashem to save them. On entering Hebron, the Pasha posted soldiers to protect the Jews while at the same time, terrible treatment was meted out to the rest of the population. On inquiring, the Jews of Hebron learned that the Jewish generals of the house of Farhi of Damascus who had accompanied Ibrahim Pasha, intervened for their brethren in Hebron and the Pasha acceded to their pleas.
In memory of this event, the day of the New Moon of Ab has been set aside in Hebron for rejoicing and is known as "Purim of Ibrahim Pasha".
6. What is Purim Missrayim/Purim of Egypt? (28 Adar I)
Not many people know the secrets behind this holiday. We hope to teach you an important piece of our tradition and history. Enjoy!! (special thanks to Joey Mosseri)
In 1524, the Jews of Cairo experienced a miracle, paralleling the great miracle of Purim. In Shushan, Hashem saved the Jewish people of Haman Harasha. In Cairo, Hashem saved the Jewish people from the evil Ahmed Sheytan.
Sultan Sulieman of the time, placed Ahmed Sheytan as viceroy over Cairo and Egypt. The Sultan gave Ahmed Sheytan a couple of conditions that he, as viceroy, must keep. Among these conditions, was that Ahmed Sheytan had to keep the likeness of the Sultan on the money of Cairo. Immediately upon seizing power, Ahmed Sheytan attempted to force Abraham Castro, head of the Mint (where currency was produced), to change the money.
Abraham Castro refused and fled to Turkey to seek support from the Sultan. Ahmed Sheytan began to break away from the Sultan's control, trying to gain power himself. Many of the Jews in Egypt had remained loyal to the Sultan, and so Ahmed Sheytan imprisoned many Jews and announced that he would massacre all the Jews in Cairo on a certain day. On that very day, an uprising broke out against the rebellious viceroy, and he was killed. Since that time, the Jews of Cairo have observed that day as a Purim, with their own Megillah telling the story.
The 28th day of Adar, is celebrated as a "Purim" in Cairo, commemorating the salvation the Jews of Cairo received from Hashem. Today, we continue the tradition and say Yehi Shem on this day of Purim Missrayim.
