DAILY DOSE I:
Exposing the Light
By Tzvi Freeman
All the world's problems stem from light being withheld.
Our job then, is to correct this. Wherever we find light,
we must rip away its casings, exposing it to all, letting it
shine forth to the darkest ends of the earth.
Especially the light you yourself hold.

The Last War
By Tzvi Freeman
Some people are waiting for a final, apocalyptic war. But the final war is not fought on battlefields,
nor at sea, nor in the skies above. Neither is it a war between leaders or nations.
The final war is fought in the heart of each human being, with the armies of his or her deeds in this world.
The final war is the battle of Chanukah and the miracle of light.

DAILY DOSE:
Greece Defeated
The Ancient Greeks couldn’t understand us Jews. They asked us to describe our G–d.
We said He could not be described. They asked us to explain how He created a world out of
nothing. We said it could not be explained. They told us that which could not be explained could not exist.
And so continued the debate between philosophy and Torah for many centuries
Step by step, men described and explained everything they saw, until there was no room left for miracles,
for prophecy, for divine providence, for G-d.
It was then that the fountains of wisdom opened for humankind and we gazed into the mysteries of the atom,
of energy fields, of black holes in space.
Suddenly, the universe became once again a wondrous place. Suddenly,
we discovered that existence itself could not truly be described or explained.
In truth, the greatest mystery is that anything exists at all.
Today, it is okay to believe in the supernatural, for the "Laws of Nature"
have been deposed from their throne. There is no reason to deny free choice, f
or the iron chain of Cause and Effect has been loosened. Today, once again, scientists talk
about the oneness of the cosmos and a Consciousness within it.
Today, if anyone should tell you that Science has all the answers, respond that yes, it does.
Its answer is to stand in awe at the design of this universe in which we live.
By Tzvi Freeman
A Daily Dose of Wisdom from the Rebbe

Growing Each Day
Rabbi Abraham J. Twerski
They established these eight days of Chanukah to give thanks and praise to Your great Name (Siddur).
Jewish history is replete with miracles that transcend the miracle of the Menorah.
Why is the latter so prominently celebrated while the others are relegated to relative obscurity?
Perhaps the reason is that most other miracles were Divinely initiated; i.e
God intervened to suspend the laws of nature in order to save His people from calamity.
The miracle of the Menorah was something different. Having defeated the Seleucid Greek invaders,
the triumphant Jews entered the Sanctuary. There they found that they could light the Menorah for only one day,
due to a lack of undefiled oil. Further, they had no chance of replenishing the supply for eight days.
They did light the Menorah anyway, reasoning that it was best to do what was within their ability
to do and to postpone worrying about the next day until such worry was appropriate.
This decision elicited a Divine response and the Menorah stayed lit for that day and for seven more.
This miracle was thus initiated by the Jews themselves, and the incident was set down
as a teaching for all future generations: concentrate your efforts on what you can do, and do it! Leave the rest to God.
While even our best and most sincere efforts do not necessarily bring about miracles,
the teaching is nevertheless valid. Even the likelihood of failure in the future should not
discourage us from any constructive action that we can take now.
Today I shall ...
.. focus my attention on what it is that I can do now, and do it to the best of my ability.

Love Pulls

There is only one way to bring people closer to Torah, whether your friend,
your spouse, your child, or a complete stranger. It is not with rebuke, not

with thick cords of love, by showing your faith in who they are and with real deeds.

If we truly appreciate the gift of life that the Almighty gave us, we will constantly say,

Getting Along
By Tzvi Freeman
When we can’t get along with someone,
we like to blame it on that person’s faults:
Stupidity, incompetence, outrageous actions, aggression or some other evil.
The real reason is none of these. It is that the world is broken,
and we are the shattered fragments.
And all that stops us from coming back together
is that we each imagine ourselves to be whole.

GROWING EACH DAY (Excerpts)
Rabbi Abraham Twerski
G-d is your shadow at your right hand (Psalms 121:5).
The Baal Shem Tov taught that G-d acts toward individuals
accordingly as they act toward other people. Thus, if people are
willing to forgive those who have offended them, G-d will similarly
overlook their misdeeds. If a person is very judgmental and reacts
with anger to any offense, G=d will be equally strict. The meaning of,
G-d is your shadow, is that a person's shadow mimics his or her every action.

.. try to relate to people in the same manner I would wish God to relate to me.

Associated Press:

Jewish group confirms rabbi, wife killed in India

NEW YORK (AP) &lsqauo; The Chabad-Lubavitch movement has confirmed that a New York
rabbi and his wife are among the dead in the India terrorist attack.

A spokesman, Rabbi Zalman Schmotkin, says Rabbi Gavriel Noach Holtzberg and
his wife, Rivka, have been killed in Mumbai. They ran the movement's local
headquarters, which was one of 10 sites attacked.

The couple's toddler son, Moshe Holtzberg, was taken out of the center by an
employee, and is now with his grandparents.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information.
AP's earlier story is below.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) &lsqauo; A father and his teenage daughter from a Virginia
community that promotes a form of meditation were among those killed in the
terrorist attacks in India, a colleague said Friday.

Alan Scherr, 58, and daughter Naomi, 13, were in a cafe Wednesday night in
Mumbai when they were killed, said Bobbie Garvey, a spokeswoman for the
Synchronicity Foundation. The U.S. State Department confirmed their deaths
on Friday morning.

The Scherrs were among 25 foundation participants in a spiritual program in
Mumbai. Four others on the mission were injured in the cafe attack in the
luxury Oberoi hotel, Garvey said, including two women from Tennessee.

Members of the New York-based Chabad-Lubavitch ultra-Orthodox Jewish
movement were anxiously awaiting the names of victims at its local
headquarters in Mumbai, which was one of 10 sites attacked.

Among the three people rescued from the center Thursday morning was a
toddler identified as the 18-month-old son of the couple running the center,
Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife, Rivka.

The whereabouts of the couple, who moved to India from Brooklyn, are still
unknown. The bodies of five hostages were found by Indian commandoes early
Friday night.

The Virginia father was a Maryland native and a former college professor who
lived at the Synchronicity sanctuary about 15 miles southwest of
Charlottesville.

"I would call them bright stars," Garvey said of the Scherrs.
"Extraordinary, bright, very positive &lsqauo; examples to the world."

The Scherrs had lived at the foundation all of Naomi's life, Garvey said.
Alan Scherr's wife, Kia, and her two sons did not travel with them to India

According to the foundation's Web site, the community is led by Master
Charles, a former leading disciple of Swami Paramahansa Muktananda. He is
described on the Web site as "one of the most popular spiritual teachers
from India to build a following the West in the 1970s." He taught a form of
yoga.

Garvey identified the Synchronicity injured as Helen Connolly of Toronto,
who was grazed by a bullet; Rudrani Devi and Linda Ragsdale, both of
Nashville, who both underwent surgery for bullet wounds; and Michael Rudder
of Montreal, who remains in intensive care after being shot three times.
Other members of the mission narrowly escaped the attack.

Wesley Hill Message from the Mayor - Road Safety

The following is from the November letter from Wesley Hills.  The following are excerpts
Concerned with ROAD SAFETY.
For full newsletter:
http://www.wesleyhills.org/News/Newsletters/newsletter%20Nov08.pdf

Road Safety
Recently, there were two unfortunate hit-and-run accidents in the Village.
In the first instance, a 55 year old man was crossing Route 306 at 12:30 in the morning.
He was wearing dark clothing and no reflectors of any kind.
Prior to the accident, the man was often seen wandering around and across Route 306.  It
was reported that the man was walking home after the Sukkot Holiday, and that there was
more traffic due to the Holiday.  Neither of those statements is valid  During the Holiday,
traffic is much lighter than normal in the Village, and the Holiday ended at 7:00 pm, more than
5 hours before the accident occurred.  In fact, the victim was returning from the Mobil station
where he had just made a purchase, something that would not occur during the Holiday.  The
accident occurred within feet of a sidewalk that currently exists on the West side of Route
306, beginning at Willow Tree Road, going North for several hundred feet.  Therefore,
sidewalks were not the issue here, especially since the victim was crossing the road at the
time.
In the second instance, three young boys were walking on Lime Kiln Road, when one of them
was hit and knocked into one of the other boys.  Fortunately, in this case, the injuries were
not very serious.  Once again, the boys were wearing dark clothing and no reflectors.  The
accident occurred within feet of an existing sidewalk, but the boys were walking three abreast,
on the other side of the road, in the direction of traffic.

Both accidents are very upsetting.  One of the largest concerns, is the fact that the drivers of
the vehicles did not stop.

Pedestrians need to keep in mind that cars and trucks use the roads, and therefore
need to take appropriate precautions:
Always use sidewalks where they exist.
Always walk on the side of the road facing traffic.
Do not walk two or three abreast.
Move over and/or walk single file when vehicles are present.
Always wear reflectors when walking at dusk or night.

Cosmic Fractals
It is a wondrous feature of the cosmos, how ideas repeat themselves at vastly different scales:
As planets and stars move in grand systems about their orbits, so the electrons move about a nucleus.
So too the same pattern is found within the microcosm of the human being—
and at every scale of every thing, from every frame of reference.
At each level there is a wholeness and a oneness, and yet each breaks
down into yet more minute particles creating yet another realm of wholeness—
and we have yet to find its end.
A perfect harmony of oneness from which comes an infinitude of beings.
The artist has left His signature within His masterpiece,
and His imprint within each and every detail. Cosmic Fractals

DAILY DOSE:
The Ark
There is a raging storm at sea. There are hellish waves that crash and pound at the shore, carrying all away, leaving desolation behind.
The sea is the world of making a living. The waves are the stress and anxiety of indecision, not knowing which way to turn, on what to rely. Up and down, hot and cold -- constantly churning back and forth.
Do as Noah did and build an ark. "An ark" in Hebrew is taiva -- which means also "a word." Your ark shall be the words of meditation and of prayer. Enter into your ark, and let the waters lift you up, rather than drown you with everything else.
A Daily Dose of Wisdom from the Rebbe
-words and condensation by Tzvi Freeman

Growing Each Day:
Rabbi Abraham Twerski
God said to Noah, "Enter ... into the ark" (Genesis 7:1).
The Hebrew word for ark, teivah, has two meanings: it can mean "an ark," and it can also mean "a word." In the above verse, the latter meaning tells us that God instructed Noah to "enter into the word." Rabbi Moshe of Kobrin expounded on this theme, explaining that when we pray, we should "enter into the words," i.e. totally immerse ourselves into each word of prayer, as though the word is encompassing us.
A listener once asked him: "How can a big human being possibly enter into a little word?" Rabbi Moshe answered, People who consider themselves bigger than the word are not the kind of person we are talking about."
The Talmud states that people's prayers are not accepted unless they efface themselves before God (Sotah 5a). God abhors those who are egotistical, and therefore the prayers of a vain person are not likely to be received favorably.
People preoccupied with their egos remain external to their prayers. The truly humble person feels small enough to "enter" even the tiniest word.
Today I shall ...
.. try to throw myself entirely into my prayers by setting aside those thoughts and feelings that would inflate my ego.

Where Lives the Torah- Where is the Torah?
Does it reside in the heavens with the angels?
Or in a parchment scroll in the ark of the synagogue?
Or with the rabbis and scholars?
It lives in the heart of each person who learns it,
in the voice of the one who discusses it
