Memorializing the Murdered through the Teachings of their Master
The eight young men murdered on March 6, 2008 in
Yeshivat Mercaz HaRav in Jerusalem were all
fourth or fifth generation students of the revered
founder of that Yeshiva, more than eighty years ago,
Rav Abraham Isaac Kook. The teachings of Rav Kook
emphasize love of the Land of Israel and the People of Israel.
It would be especially appropriate to memorialize
these boys by perpetuating his teachings. To that end,
The OU plan to deliver a brief weekly lesson, based on his teachings,
for the duration of the year of mourning, concluding Rosh Chodesh Adar, 5769.

DAILY DOSE:
A Quiet Heart
The human heart is beautiful.
The human heart can know secrets deeper than any mind could know.
The mind cannot contain G-d, but deep inside the heart there is a place that can.
Yet there is nothing more dysfunctional than a brain controlled by emotions
In fact, the finest mind is capable of the most horrid crimes when under the heart's management.
Let the heart be quiet and hear out the mind. In that quiet listening,
she will discover her true beauty and her deepest secrets will awaken.

The Tragedies that occurred on Tisha B’ Av.
Ezras Torah:
Our Sages have emphasized that the essence of a fast day
is the process of Teshuva Repentance. This is particularly so
for those sins that were responsible for the destruction of
the Beis HaMikdash, and yet, which we remain guilty of today.
Here is a partial listing of those transgressions:
Jerusalem was destroyed because:
the Jews profaned Shabbos.
they did not provide for the Torah education of their small children.
they did not recite the Shema morning and night.
they showed contempt for Torah scholars.
they had unwarranted hatred for each other.
they hardened their hearts to any fear of Divine retribution (see Gittin 55b).
Tisha B’ Av 5702 (1942)

The Holocaust is rooted in the destruction of the Temple --
which caused a loss of moral clarity in humanity.
Deportations from Warsaw Ghetto to the Treblinka
concentration camp begin.
"We Jews of Warsaw, sons of those exiles, sit on
the ground to mourn our own personal churban,
the destruction of a major community --
the largest and most vigorous in Europe...
We weep at our fate, a nation without a land,
within the grasp of our fiercest enemy
and condemned to death. We grieve both for
the loss of the Holy Temple and the extinction of our lives.
(Warsaw Ghetto Diaries, pgs. 55-6)
The beginning of the end of the
Warsaw Ghetto coincided with Tisha B'Av.
Tisha B'Av July 23, 1943,
The first trainload of Jews arrived at their destination, Treblinka, and sent to the gas chambers.

The Convenient Mind
The mind will always find the answer most convenient for itself.
Even when searching for spirituality, for enlightenment, the mind
will only rest where there is enough room to remain a mind.
Therefore, on its own, it can never come to know the Infinite.
To reach the Infinite takes a sense that is beyond the need to exist,
the essential knowledge of the inner soul. Only once the mind has
drunken from that fountain can it be trusted to see beyond itself.

Unexperience
If you can experience it, it could not be the most infinite.
If you can feel it, it couldn't be the essence of G-d.
The highest points in life are not the revelations and experiences.
The highest points are the times when you just do.
When you just do, you may not feel a thing.
You may not have a moment to ask yourself if you feel a thing.
But you are one with His essence and being. You are a ray of His light.

The Atheist
The atheist, too, has a god, and it is himself.
The idolater at least understands there is something greater than him,
something beyond the grasp of his physical senses, some external forces to which he is subject.
But for the atheist, all the universe is defined by his own understanding,
all ethics are subject to his approval and even he himself is an artifact of his own mind.
He is a self-made man, for he creates his own universe and squeezes himself inside it.

Growing Each Day
Rabbi Abraham Twerski
Which is the good way of life to which a person should adhere? Rabbi Eliezer says: A benevolent eye (Ethics of the Fathers 2:13).
"A benevolent eye" or "a good eye" is the Hebrew expression for not begrudging people that which they have. The corollary is that the way of life to avoid is having "a malevolent eye," i.e. begrudging people what they have.
In Yiddish, the equivalent of "a benevolent eye" is "to fargin," as in the expression "I fargin him with all my heart." There is no equivalent word in English for fargin, and it can only be translated in the negative, i.e. to fargin is to not begrudge. As noted in 23 Adar, the absence of a word in a language may be a clue about something in that particular culture. Is it possible that much of the English-speaking world knows only how to begrudge, but does not know how to fargin?
Be that as it may, Rabbi Eliezer considers "a benevolent eye" much more than just a desirable trait. He considers it an all-encompassing feature that constitutes the optimum adjustment to life. Other people may possess more material wealth. Their children may have achieved more. They may enjoy better health. In whatever way other people may be more fortunate, Rabbi Eliezer sees farginning them as the character trait that will make all other traits fall into line. Conversely, not farginning is a trait that so permeates one's personality that everything one thinks, feels, or does will be negatively affected.
Perhaps not everyone can rejoice in what others have, but we can all fargin
Today I shall ...
.. try to fargin everyone what they have and avoid begrudging anything to anyone.

Conviction
All the elaborate proofs and deep philosophy will never stand you firmly on your feet.
The only thing that will make it work for you is your own inherent conviction.
Because even at the time your mind is not thinking about whether this is true or not,
you yourself know within that it is so, and know that you believe it to be so, with a knowledge
beyond anything your mind could fathom. It is a conviction all the winds of the world cannot uproot,
for it comes from within and from the heritage of your ancestors who believed as well.
The challenge is only to ignore those doubts that come to you from the outside,
and to allow that inner knowledge to shine through and guide you.
