Yahrtzeit of Rabbi Yisrael Abuchatzeira, the great Sephardic sage and kabbalist known as the Baba Sali (1889-1984). Born in Morocco, the Baba Sali made aliyah following the creation of the State of Israel, eventually settling in the Negev town of Netivot. There he served as a central address for Jews seeking advice, blessings, and in many cases, miracles. Stories abound of his supernatural abilities -- if someone complained about a physical malady, he would prescribe a spiritual action to rectify it. If he was presented with money as a gift, he could identify if it was earned in a "kosher" way or not. He had elevated beyond the physical to the extent that he would eat only small morsels each day. Today his grave in Netivot is a popular place of pilgrimage and prayer.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN UPTON HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW & ICE.WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO MIDNIGHT EST WEDNESDAY NIGHT.
SNOW WILL DEVELOP AFTER MIDNIGHT & WILL BE HEAVY AT TIMES DURING THE WEDNESDAY MORNING COMMUTE. MAXIMUM HOURLY SNOWFALL RATES WILL BE 1 INCH PER HOUR IN NARROW BANDS. SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 5 TO 8 INCHES ARE LIKELY.
AS THE LOW GETS CLOSER TO THE REGION, WARM AIR WILL MOVE RAPIDLY NORTH & CHANGE THE SNOW TO FREEZING RAIN. THIS WILL OCCUR LATER WEDNESDAY MORNING. UP TO A 3 HOUR PERIOD OF FREEZING RAIN FROM LATE MORNING THROUGH EARLY AFTERNOON MAY CAUSE ICE ACCUMULATIONS UP TO 1/3 OF AN INCH.

In 1728, Congregation Shearith Israel purchased a plot of land in lower Manhattan, site of the first synagogue in North America. At the time, New York had the only Jewish community in the country; . Shearith Israel was the only Jewish congregation in New York City from 1654 until 1825, having been founded by Brazilian Jews of Spanish and Portuguese origin. Governor Peter Stuyvesant, known for his anti-Semitic views, had initially denied Jews the right to worship in a public gathering;
Despite their permission to stay in New Amsterdam they continued to face legal troubles and were not given permission to worship in a public synagogue during for some time (throughout the Dutch period and even into the British). The Congregation did, however, make arrangements for a cemetery beginning in 1656. It was not until 1730 that the Congregation was able to build a synagogue of its own, which was built on Mill Street in lower Manhattan. Prior to 1730, as is evidenced from a map of New York from 1695, the congregation worshipped in rented quarters on Beaver Street and subsequently on Mill Street. Since 1730 the Congregation has worshipped in five synagogues:

Crosby Street, 1834
19th Street, 1860
West 70th Street, 1897 (present building.)

These messages may contain factual information about the conflict and

additional news coverage of the conflict can be viewed by following a
link provided in the email body. If users click on this link, they are
redirected to a bogus CNN website that appears to contain a video.
Users who attempt to view this video will be prompted to update to a
new version of Adobe Flash Player in order to view the video. This
update is not a legitimate Adobe Flash Player update; it is malicious
code. If users download this executable file, malicious code may be
installed on their systems.
