FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Supervisor St. lawrence gets approval of four-way
Left-turn arrows at Viola Road intersection
The Supervisor of the Town of Ramapo, Christopher P. St. Lawrence, has
announced that the New York State Department of Transportation will be
upgrading to a left-turn arrow phase from all four directions on the traffic
signal at the intersection of Viola Road and Route 306 in Monsey.
Presently, there are left-turn arrows at the intersection from three of the
four directions. Motorists driving east on Viola Road are often subjected to
lengthy delays due to their having to wait for an opportunity to turn left
to travel north onto Route 306. In addition, the heavily trafficked
intersection exposes motorists to a potentially dangerous situation.
At the request of Supervisor St. Lawrence, a study of the intersection was
conducted to determine if the change was warranted. The Department of
Transportation concurred with the Supervisor and agreed to initiate the
change in signaling to include the left-turn phase from all four directions
³I am delighted that the New York State Department of Transportation agreed
to the signal change², stated Supervisor St. Lawrence. ³The modification to
the signal will greatly impact upon and enhance driver safety. I commend the
Department of Transportation for understanding the needs of the community
and for providing this safety improvement.² He continued.
The date for the signal modification has not been scheduled but it should
take place within the coming weeks.

Yahrtzeit of Kalonymus Z. Wissotzky, a famous Russian Jewish philanthropist who passed away in 1904. Wissotzky once owned the tea concession for the Czar's entire military operation. Since the Czar's soldiers numbered in the millions and tea drinking was a daily Russian custom, this concession made Wissotzky very rich. Wissotzky started a small tea company in Israel. After his death, the tea company passed to his heirs. Then in 1917, the communists swept to power in Russia, seizing all of the Wissotzky company's assets. The only business left in their possession was the small tea company in Israel. The family fled Russia, built the Israeli business, and today Wissotzky is a leading brand of tea in Israel, with exports to countries worldwide -- including Russia.

Community Message - Alarm test
Emergency Siren Test – EPZ
A full volume test of the new alert and notification sirens located
throughout the emergency planning zone will be held Wednesday, June 3, 2009
between 10:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. The sirens will sound for four minutes.
In an actual emergency, the new sirens would sound simultaneously at full
volume for four minutes. The sirens are not a signal to evacuate but rather
to alert the public to tune to their local Emergency Alert System (EAS)
radio or television station (100.7 FM-WHUD) for important information.
Please do not hesitate to contact the Office of Fire & Emergency Services at
1-800-942-1450, should you have any questions.
